National Mortality and Length of Stay Facility Benchmarking
Based on a recent research study (http://canjsurg.ca/60-6-380/), the following tools are available to benchmark your facilities on mortality and length of stay. Instructions on how to use these tools are provided. Please consult with your trauma registry analyst to use these files with registry data. Note that data is localized and the files do not transmit data outside your organization. All calculations are done within the worksheet. These are the files including the instructions:
Files for Download:
- Instructions (0.4mb)
- AIS 98 LOS Worksheet (40mb)
- AIS 2005 LOS Worksheet (40mb)
- AIS 98 Mortality Worksheet (35mb)
- AIS 2005 Mortality Worksheet (35mb)
If you are interested in discussing your facility’s result with others at a future TACPIC meeting, please send a note to Amanda Mcfarlan (McFarlanA@smh.ca) or Jaimini Thakore (Jaimini.thakore@phsa.ca).

Pediatric Committee
Purpose
To promote quality pediatric trauma care across Canada by providing leadership in clinical care, education, research and trauma prevention.
Objectives
To provide a forum for discussion and networking between Canadian Pediatric Trauma Programs and trauma care providers.
i. Develop evidence-based practice guidelines related to pediatric trauma care.
ii. Review national data on pediatric trauma with a vision toward benchmarking.
iii. Develop and support Canadian multicentre pediatric trauma research.
iv. Participate with other national organizations advocating for injury prevention policies and
strategies, with a focus on children and youth.
To share practices, especially those evidence-based, applicable to the care of the pediatric trauma patient.
To generate improvement opportunities for Canadian Pediatric Trauma Programs.
To facilitate/lead educational endeavours involving pediatric trauma care, including the program content for the pediatric concurrent session of the TAC annual scientific meeting.
Membership
Membership is open to any active TAC member with an interest in pediatric trauma.
Activity
Over the past few years, this group has been concentrating on trauma treatment, compiling data from all of the pediatric centres across the country with respect to the set-up of their pediatric trauma systems. This includes pre-hospital indicators for calling a major trauma resuscitation, components of the trauma resuscitation team, administrative structure of their trauma team systems and amazing protocols that could be shared by others. It is becoming a great resource and is available to any TAC member that could use it for pediatric specific initiative – such as setting up a pediatric trauma team system or considering accreditation/verification or re-accreditation/verification. It is also a good resource to use when approaching administration – providing evidence of “what other centres have”.
There are currently five TAC accreditated Pediatric Trauma centres in Canada, with several more contemplating or getting ready to “take the plunge”. This group highly recommends such an initiative. It not only provides your institution the opportunity to critically evaluate your trauma program, but also can provide some excellent insight to further develop your system. These suggestions can often have a degree of leverage that may be of benefit when negotiating with the administration for what your program needs. If you are interested, please see the Accreditation Committee section on this website.
The Pediatric Trauma Coordinators have also been busy with a quality improvement project comparing quality indicators used in each Pediatric Trauma Centre across the country. The group started by compiling those indicators used that each program felt were the most important to capture and is now at the stage of imputing the data into a collective database. The goal of this project is to develop national benchmarking for pediatric trauma patients being treated at Trauma Centres across the country.
Lastly, this committee was involved in helping to standardize the clearance of cervical spines in multiply injured pediatric patients. The pathways were published in the Journal of Trauma in April
2011. We are very proud of the work that was accomplished with a large group from multidisciplinary medical members.
