Remembering Dr Ronald Daniel Stewart (October 11, 1942-October 21, 2024

Dear  Members, Fellow Canadians, and Colleagues

It is with great sadness that a friend and honorary member of TAC , Dr. Ronald Daniel Stewart, has passed away . He is fondly remembered as one of the founders of Emergency Medicine in Canada. He was pivotal in developing emergency medicine and ambulance care and helped create the Los Angeles paramedic system, when pre hospital personnel were first being introduced in the continuum of care.

Locally, in Nova Scotia, Dr. Stewart helped consolidate the Emergency Health Services and paramedics. He was a professor at Dalhousie University and provided leadership in many roles, academia, government as a previous provincial Minister of Health .

He was recognized for his efforts by being honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993 and promoted within the Order to a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2023, being invested earlier this spring.

He grew up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia , graduated from Acadia University, Medical school, and residency in Los Angeles, where he trained in Emergency Medicine, long before it was recognized as a specialty in Canada. It was in L.A. that he was tasked to train the first generation of paramedics and became known as Doc Hollywood for his work as a script advisor.

He returned to Canada  and to Nova Scotia, where he helped develop the Emergency Health system, train new doctors the newly recognized field and advanced pre hospital care.  He has been recognized internationally for his efforts and his commitment to the speciality , by being awarded the Hero of Emergency Medicine, by the American College of Emergency Physicians, in 2008.

He was a cherished member of TAC and was an honorary member of our organization. His efforts and collaboration will be remembered for decades to come , particularly in his unwavering dedication to the discipline and his equanimity and inclusivity of all patients.

The TAC organization wishes to recognize Dr. Ronald Stewart and express condolences to his family, colleagues and countless people that he touched throughout his life.  His celebration of life will be on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
