In Memorium: Dr Sean Cleary

ttps://www.humphreymiles.com/obituaries/Dr-Sean-Patrick-Cleary?obId=44025488

On behalf of the Trauma Association of Canada, it is a privilege to reflect on the career and impact of Dr. Sean Cleary, an accomplished hepatopancreaticobiliary  surgeon, whose dedication to medicine has left a indelible mark on both his colleagues and his patients. Born in 1972, Sean devoted his professional life to the care of individuals with complex hepatopancreatobiliary disease, combining exceptional surgical skill with a deep sense of compassion and commitment .

On a personal level, I first had the pleasure of meeting Sean during my time as a medical student at Western University. He was a year ahead in medical school, and he was always humble, cheery, and good natured. He would always ask others how they were doing and coping and made it a point to genuinely be interested in your life. Even at that early stage, it was clear that his presence in the clinical environment was unique. He combined a meticulous approach to patient care with an approachable demeanor that inspired students, residents, and fellow physicians alike. His ability to make complex surgical principles both understandable and meaningful to learners reflected not only his mastery of the discipline but also his passion for teaching and mentorship.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cleary  earned a reputation as a surgeon who does not shy away from the most challenging cases. His leadership in hepatobiliary surgery has been characterized by a commitment to excellence and innovation, and evidence-based practice and this was evidenced by his career path , which took him to the Mayo Clinic. At the same time, his scholarly contributions, including research and academic leadership, have strengthened the foundation of surgical education and advanced clinical practice for future generations.

For those of us who have had the opportunity to learn from him directly, Sean  represents the ideal blend of surgeon, educator, and mentor. His career is a testament to the profound influence that one dedicated physician can have—not only on the lives of the patients he treats, but also on the development of colleagues and trainees who will carry his example forward.

I met with him at CAGS in Winnipeg last year, and I continued to be in awe of his humility, compassion and his endearing quality of being inclusive of the entire breadth of general surgery colleagues. His question to me last year was: “How can I  help with TAC?” I have not forgotten that willingness to collaborate.

It is with gratitude and respect that I acknowledge Dr. Cleary’s contributions, and I am honored to count him as both a colleague and a source of inspiration.

Jagadish Rao, President of TAC (2024-26)
