Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

This federal statutory holiday was created through legislative amendments made by Parliament.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR TAC

 

After a job search and application/interview process, the TAC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Cheryl Connors to the role of Executive Director as of September 1, 2023. Cheryl will run the affairs of the Association from her home office in Caledon, Ontario. She will be overlapping with Kate for orientation during September and the office location will be transitioned during this time.

Cheryl has an extensive healthcare association management background, with over 30 years’ experience. She specializes in education program development, financial and event management, marketing/ communications, public relations, strategic planning, fundraising, and government relations. Cheryl has also worked as the executive director of several professional and trade associations, including the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care, the Canadian Association for Quality Assurance in Healthcare and the Canadian Market Research Association. Cheryl also worked as a Strategic Communications Planner with the Ontario government. Cheryl has an Honours BA in Political Science as well as certificates in Marketing and Public Relations. She is a long-time member of the Canadian Association of Association Executives. At the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care, Cheryl created a training and certification program for healthcare professionals in smoking cessation. She was successful in securing a million dollar grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada and securing partnerships with Alberta Health Services and the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH) to develop and deliver a very successful education and certification smoking cessation program.

At this time, the Board of TAC would like to thank Kate Mahon for her past nine (9) years of service. Kate was the first Executive Director for TAC starting in 2013. She has strengthened the business model and the governance structure of TAC during her tenure and been an ambassador for the Association. She will be greatly missed by all the TAC family, and we wish her all the best in her retirement plans. Kate’s last day with TAC will be September 30^th.

On July 8, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust will join forces with over 40 global paramedic associations, College of Paramedics, higher education institutions and affiliated organisations to celebrate the first ever International Paramedics Day.

It will be a day to remember and salute the personal sacrifices and life-saving efforts made by paramedics and first responders during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, as well as recognising all that they do to give their patients the best possible treatment and care.

The theme for the inaugural International Paramedics Day is ‘Proud to be a Paramedic’.

Oxford Health paramedics make a massive contribution to the work of the Trust and have additional skills which make them specialists suited to working with specific services and patient groups.

Craig Barlow, Trust Clinical Educator & Advanced Clinical Practitioner, said: “Over the past few years the number of paramedics working within Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has grown year on year with now over 40 paramedics directly employed throughout the organisation.

“The paramedic profession has seen huge changes and developments over the years, allowing the profession to diversify in other clinical setting and roles outside of the traditional ambulance service.

“These innovative developments have brought many opportunities for those paramedics joining Oxford Health, allowing them to delivering outstanding, patient centred care to all of our services users. The paramedic profession forms part of and is represented within the wider Allied Health Care Professional (AHP) network. As a representative of the organisation, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a Happy International Paramedic Day!”

International Paramedics Day is celebrated every year on July 8 because this marks the anniversary of the birth of Dominique Jean Larrey, the French military doctor who became Napoleon Bonaparte’s chief surgeon of the Grand Armee and the man often referred to as the ‘father of modern-day ambulance services.’

International Paramedics Day is one of the most important days of the year to:

• Celebrate paramedics and first responders around the globe;
• Promote the profession;
• Acknowledge the difference they can make in an emergency or crisis;
• To raise awareness and champion all the settings paramedics work including primary and secondary care, GP surgeries, military, offshore, research, education, helicopter emergency medical services and telephone triage systems
