The Trauma Association of Canada is proud to announce that Trauma General Surgery was recently granted recognition as an Area of Focused competence and a Diploma bearing speciality by the Royal College, the first surgical specialty to be granted such recognition. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons recently created this categorization to recognize additional training and expertise undertaken by specialists that may allow such physicians to participate in activities related to public education, advocacy, leadership, research and the creation of health policy, without causing further fragmentation of the parent specialty in a specific facet of medicine. Through the creation of the Area of Focused Competence in Trauma General Surgery, we will develop national standards for fellowship training and evaluation. As well, Trauma General Surgery Diplomats will be even better positioned to advocate for health of populations under the auspices of the Trauma Association of Canada.

Welcome to TAC! Welcome to everyone with an interest and passion in all aspects of injury control, trauma care and injury prevention. TAC is a national organization, with a pan-Canadian mission to improve outcomes for trauma patients and to advocate for injury prevention. It’s membership is inclusive of all health care providers, researchers and public policy and health advocates for optimal injury control in Canada and internationally.

I would like to thank the organizers of the very successful TAC 2011 Annual Scientific Assembly in Banff Alberta for a world class event covering all aspects of trauma from injury prevention to acute care to bench research and beyond. We look forward to another exciting event in 2012 when the TAC annual scientific meeting is held in Toronto Ontario April 12 and 13th (Link to meeting). The meeting will be cutting edge in all aspects of trauma care, associated research and policy and injury prevention with exceptional national and international speakers and pre and post conference educational and meeting events.

A special thanks is in order to TAC committee members and chairs who have worked hard over the last year to promote the work of TAC including the committees of injury prevention, accreditation and all others. New TAC members are invited to join and actively participate in the committee of their choice or to consider joining other TAC subgroups including the Interdisciplinary Trauma Network of Canada (ITNC) and Trauma Registry Information Specialists of Canada (TRISC). A final special thanks for the organizers and presenters at the recent TAC Symposium at CAGS/CSF in London Ontario where the “Update in Trauma Surgery” was well received.

I welcome you to an organization that offers national leadership and partiicpation in all aspects of injury control and trauma care and has done so for over 29 years!

    President's Message

Welcome to TAC and the new TAC website! Our website and logo have been professionally re-designed to make our “brand” more up-to-date and visible. Please explore the new website and send any suggestions to our website administrator, Michelle Mercado.

I would like to thank the organizers of the very successful TAC 2011 Annual Scientific Assembly in Banff Alberta for a world class event covering all aspects of trauma from injury prevention to acute care to bench research and beyond. We look forward to another exciting event in 2012 when the TAC annual scientific meeting is held in Toronto Ontario April 12 and 13th (Go to Events under Links and Resources).

Dr. Murray Girotti’s great contributions to this organization and trauma care was recognized at the 2011 meeting with the inaugural Murray Girotti Injury Prevention Lecture which will be given annually. This year’s outstanding talk was given on April 7 by Dr. David Wesson, the William J. Pokorny Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Special congratulations to all the winners of the TAC research contests held at our recent meeting. (Go to News under Links and Resources for the list of winners)

Accreditation of trauma systems by TAC continues to move forward and recently a new MOU was signed with Accreditation Canada to plan further elaboration of trauma standards and accreditation in Canada. TAC was also very happy to participate in the recent successfully concluded Canadian Blood Services strategic plan to optimize organ and tissue donation and transplantation for all Canadians.

We look forward to further active TAC committee work, advances in trauma research and continued successful partnership with our very active subgroups (ITNC, TRISC and NTRAC).
