Committee on Trauma (COT) Residents Paper Competition Winners for Eastern and Western Regions

The  Board of Directions extends congratulation to Dr James Byrne (Eastern Region) and Dr Eiman  Zargaran (Western Region) in having their papers chosen by the COT judges for presentation at the 2016 Committee on Trauma Annual Meeting being held in San Diego on March 10th – 12th this year.

Dr. James Byrne (Eastern Region COT Residents Paper Competition Winner)

Dr. Byrne is a PGY-4 General Surgery Resident pursuing his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.  Specific focuses of his research are currently on the Influence of Prehospital Trauma Systems of Care on Trauma Patient Outcomes and Trauam Center Performance, as well as Venous Thromboembolism Following Major Trauma.

Title of Paper:

"Timing of Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury:  A Propensity Matched Cohort Study"

Dr. Byrne's preceptor is Dr. Nathen Avery


Dr. Eiman Zargaran (Western Region COT Resident Paper Competition Winner)

Dr Zargaran is in his final year of General Surgery training at the University of British Columbia after spending two years living in Cape Town, South Africa working on this project with the guidance and mentorship from project supervisors Dr.Morad Hameed and Dr. Andrew Nicol. During this time he was also able to work clinically as a general surgery resident at Groote Schuur Hospital, one of the world's busiest trauma hospitals. The team is currently working to expand the trauma health record to additional low resource trauma centres in Africa and Latin America. Dr Zargaran will be starting a Critical Care Fellowship July 1, 2016 followed by a Trauma Fellowship while maintaining his global health surgical interests.
