The Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) is a tool used to measure dimensions of severity of a single injury and is used in the calculation of the Injury Severity Score (ISS), a system which measures overall severity in the multiply injured patient. The AIS and ISS have been used in crash investigations, research, outcome studies and has been an essential component of trauma registries since the early 1970’s. Trauma Registries in Canada have been using the AIS 1990 since 1992. The founders of the AIS, the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s (AAAM), have released the AIS 2005. Trauma communities across the world are moving toward adopting AIS 05 and some still investigating the impact of the change.
CIHI will be accepting ISS based on AIS 90 and AIS 2005 codes as of the date of call for 2008 data. CIHI will continue to report ISS based on AIS 90 as the standard until NTRAC has made the decision to move forward with AIS 2005 and discontinue use of AIS 90. All provinces should continue submitting ISS and AIS codes based on AIS 90 until instructed otherwise. For more information on the plans for implementation of the AIS 05 in Canada see below:
